Wet Sanding vs. Dry Sanding: When Should You Use Each Method?

Sanding discs generally come in two flavors: wet-rated and dry-only. Pick the wrong one for the job and you'll either waste time, load up your disc with debris, or damage the surface you're working on. Here's how to tell which method — and which disc — fits your project.
What Is Dry Sanding?
Dry sanding is exactly what it sounds like: no water, no lubricant, just the disc against the surface. It's the default method for most wood and metal work, and it's what the vast majority of sanding jobs call for.
Best for: Bare wood, shaping and smoothing, paint/primer scuffing, most metal fabrication work, and any job where dust extraction (via a vacuum-connected sander) keeps the work area clean.

What Is Wet Sanding?
Wet sanding uses water (or a lubricant) as you sand, which reduces heat buildup, flushes away debris as you go, and produces a noticeably finer, smoother finish. It's slower and messier than dry sanding, but it's the standard method for a few specific jobs.
Best for: Auto body clear coat leveling and polishing prep, removing fine imperfections before buffing, and glass-smooth pre-finish sanding on wood where you want to eliminate every trace of scratch pattern before a topcoat.
Works with: Only our Purple Ceramic discs are rated for wet use. Green Aluminum Oxide discs are dry-only — using them wet will break down the backing and shorten disc life fast.

A Few Things to Watch For
Never wet sand with a dry-only disc — the adhesive backing isn't built to handle moisture and will fail early. If your sander uses a vacuum hose for dust extraction, wet sanding isn't compatible with that setup; it's typically done by hand or with a dedicated wet-sanding block. And always let a wet-sanded surface fully dry before moving to the next step, whether that's buffing, polishing, or applying a finish.
