Veneer Sand Through Guide

Sanding through veneer is the fastest way to destroy a piece you already paid for. It happens in seconds, usually at an edge, usually with a random orbital. Read this before the sander comes out.
The one sentence version
Assume the piece is veneer, strip chemically instead of sanding, start at the highest grit that will do the job, keep the pad flat and moving with no downward pressure, and hand sand everything within two inches of an edge. If a spot suddenly changes color, stop immediately.
Is it veneer? Four checks before you start
Two minutes here saves the whole project. Do all four, because any one of them can mislead you on a well made piece.
Check the edges
Look at the front edge of a tabletop or drawer front from an angle. Veneer shows as a distinct thin line of face wood sitting on a different colored core, or it is hidden by a separate edge banding strip whose grain runs the wrong way. A solid board has grain that wraps continuously from the face around to the edge. Chipped or lifted corners are the giveaway: a lifted flake means veneer.
Check the end grain
Find a genuine end of a board, such as the short end of a tabletop or the top of a leg. Solid wood shows real end grain, that is pores and growth rings running into the piece. If instead you see the same flat face pattern continuing around the corner, or a layered plywood edge, or a smooth uniform brown core, you are looking at veneer over a substrate.
Check the underside and the inside
Manufacturers do not veneer what nobody sees. Flip the piece, pull a drawer all the way out, and look at the back of the case. Particleboard, MDF, plywood layers, or a cheap unmatched wood underneath means the pretty face on top is a veneer. A truly solid piece usually looks the same species underneath, just unfinished.
Check for repeating grain
Wide panels are the tell. Look for a mirrored bookmatch down the center line, or the identical knot, ray fleck, or figure appearing twice at regular spacing across the panel. Nature does not repeat. Repeating or perfectly symmetrical grain across a wide top is sliced veneer laid in a pattern. Perfect uniformity with no defects at all is also suspicious.
If you still cannot tell
Treat it as veneer. The cost of being wrong in that direction is one extra hour of careful sanding. The cost of being wrong the other way is the piece.
How thick is the veneer, and how much sanding does it survive
These are ranges, not guarantees. Veneer thickness varies by maker, by era, by species, and even across a single panel. Always assume you have less than the range suggests.

Why we are not giving you a number of passes
How much material a pass removes depends on grit, pressure, sander speed, disc sharpness, how long you dwell, and the species. That is far too many variables for a fixed number, and any chart that gives you one is guessing. What is well established is the direction: hand sanding takes real effort to break through even thin veneer, while a random orbital can go through fairly quickly, and the critical response when it starts happening is to stop sanding (Popular Woodworking). Work as if you have half the thickness you think you have.
The danger zones
Sand-through almost never happens in the middle of a flat panel. It happens in these five places, and it happens in seconds.

The safe method
This is the sequence. Do not improvise a shortcut in the middle of it.
- Remove the finish chemically, not abrasively. On veneer, stripper is not the lazy option, it is the correct one. It takes the finish off without taking wood with it. Sanding a finish off veneer spends your entire thickness budget on the coating.
- Start at the highest grit that will actually do the job. Do not open with 80 because the internet said so. Try 180 on an inconspicuous area first. If it works, stay there. Only drop to 150 if 180 is genuinely not cutting, and think hard before going below that. Refinishing guidance for veneer commonly starts around 120 and works up, and on thin modern veneer even 120 is aggressive (Oakwood Veneer).
- Use no downward pressure. The weight of the sander is the correct pressure. Pressing harder does not sand faster, it slows the orbit, builds heat, and creates the wavy marks and burn-throughs that get posted in flipper groups every week.
- Keep the pad flat and always moving. Roughly one inch per second, straight passes with the grain direction of the panel, overlapping each pass by half. Never dwell. A stationary running sander cuts a dish almost instantly.
- Run dust extraction. Trapped dust becomes loose grit that scratches unpredictably, and clogged discs stop cutting and start burnishing. Open Ceramic Mesh discs pull dust through the whole face and do not clog on old finish residue, which makes them a good default on veneer work.
- Hand sand near every edge. A cork or hard rubber block with paper wrapped around it gives even pressure and immediate feedback. You feel the surface change before you see it. Start by hand for maximum control (Formwood).
- Check under raking light every few minutes. A low angle light shows both leftover scratches and the first hint of a thin spot, long before you can see either under overhead lighting.
- Stop at 220. There is no benefit to going finer before stain or paint on veneer, and every extra pass is thickness you cannot get back.
Warning signs you are about to go through
Every one of these means put the sander down now, not at the end of the pass.
Color change
A patch going lighter, greyer, or oddly flat compared to the wood around it. You are into the softer wood at the bottom of the veneer or into the glue.
A fuzzy or pinkish patch
Substrates and veneer backers often sand fuzzy rather than smooth, and many read pink, orange, or pale tan. If an area will not come smooth, that is not bad technique, that is a different material.
A glue line showing
A hard, shiny, non-absorbent line or blotch that the abrasive skates over. Once glue is visible you are at the bottom of the veneer with nothing left.
The surface stops absorbing
Wipe with mineral spirits. If one area refuses to darken like the rest, it is sealed by glue or substrate. Stain will show it as a pale ghost forever.
A visible outline appears
A soft halo or oval that follows the shape of your sanding pad, brightest in the middle. That is a dish forming and it is a few seconds from breaking through.
The sound or feel changes
Softer substrate cuts faster and quieter. If the sander suddenly feels like it is sinking or the pitch drops over one spot, lift it off and look.
You went through. Now what
Honest options only. There is no technique that makes a sand-through disappear under clear stain, so pick the outcome you can actually live with.

When to just paint it instead
Decide this before you sand, not after. Paint is not a failure state, it is a business decision.
Veneer day kit
On the bench
- Chemical stripper, scraper, and a card scraper for residue
- Cork or hard rubber sanding block for every edge and corner
- Ceramic Mesh 180 and 220, for extraction and no clogging
- Green Aluminum Oxide 180 and 220 for flat field areas
- A shop light you can lay flat for raking light checks
- Mineral spirits and a clean rag for the wipe test
Not on the bench
- Anything coarser than 150 grit, unless you have proven the veneer is thick
- A belt sander. There is no safe way to use one on veneer
- A worn disc. Dull abrasive burnishes and heats, and heat is what starts a burn-through
- Impatience. Every sand-through story starts with one more quick pass
